Miranda v. Arizona isn't quite so broad as the discussion made it. Everyone has a 5th Amendment right not to give evidence against him/herself, but in general if you want to exercise your constitutional rights, it's on you to say so. The Miranda decision said that there were some circumstances inherently so intimidating that it was necessary for law enforcement to advise people of their right not to give coerced confessions. Cops DO NOT have to give persons the Miranda warnings unless the two coercive circumstances are both present: the person is IN CUSTODY, and the person is being QUESTIONED BY A STATE ACTOR. If someone volunteers information, that can be used against that person whether or not the person is in custody. And if a person is not in custody, cops can ask questions, and if the person answers those questions, the cops can use those answers against the person. So if a person is in jail and a fellow prisoner (not a snitch paid by the cops) asks what h'es in for, his answers can be used against him even without Miranda being given. Moral: Don't tell cops anything more than you must. They are not your friends. They are trained to gather evidence of wrongdoing.

As you mentioned on your last episode, I found your podcast after it was mentioned on the SGU podcast. It's not always easy finding good, quality pod casts of these topics on I tunes. I downloaded the last couple episodes and listened to them while at work. Your show is nothing like SGU especially this episode. As much as i love the SGU podcast it can be very PC and structured. You try to be structured with informative discussions and news but my ADHD was in heaven with the humor, F bombs and discussion tangents. I was enjoying this episode so much i didn't realize the time and worked right through my lunch break. So, you suck. Keep up the good work. You gained a subscriber and will get a 5 star rating from me on I tunes.

I really enjoy listening to your show. I just had an issue with the 'Lesbian Florida teen charged with felony sexual charges' section of the show. The information from you put out was wrong. The girls didn't start dating and had sexual relationship until they were 18 and 14. The 14 year old didn't turn 15 until this year. I can understand getting the information wrong because there is so much misinformation on this case alone.

Because Kate was caught and punished by her coach. She was asked repeatedly to leave the victim alone. She ignored the punishment and those requests, and continued the relationship. Bringing the victim to her home overnight, without the parent's knowledge or permission, is what got the police involved.

Had she not taken that last step, she would not be facing any charges. And I suspect that stubborn refusal to back off the relationship, not to mention her parent's smear campaign against the victim's parents, is not helping her in any way.

Well, that is certainly the trend. The constitution is very clear on these matters and when similar cases are referenced (like creches on public squares and pictures of Jeebus in high schools), I'm sure that it will be seen that a public school is no place for religious expression. The constitution is very clear on these matters and when similar cases are referenced (like creches on public squares and pictures of Jeebus in high schools), I’m sure that it will be seen that a public school is no place for religious expression. Rick Perry had sent those cheerleaders a video to show his support, that fukker.

I just watched the live broadcast. The story about the cheerleaders and the explicitly religious messages at football games really rustles my jimmies. It's obviously a violation of church/state separation. Religious expression belongs in churches and in homes of religious people and NOT public schools. Your quote of Annie Laurie Gaylor was appropriate. Would the school board support messages like "Atheism Rocks" or "Allah is supreme"? Fuck no! So how are banners with bible passages not sectarian and therefore divisive and exclusionary?

It's important to be out so I can share my beliefs as an Atheist. To teach others that the only Heaven and Hell is what you create it to be here on Earth. Not some place floating in the clouds. There is good and evil in all of us! It is Religion that causes Hate, War, Non Equality and a world torn apart because of a book that no one truly knows how to read or interpret. For all we know the author could of been insane or was just killing time when he wrote his fairytale? Would you believe in God if a Caveman wrote the Bible? Probably not, but at least we know that they really existed! What is real is, the fact we are from the same World and we are all Human. I look at facts not a book that forced and feared people to believe in what they wanted them to. The mind is a powerful thing and easily influenced by the power of suggestion. To be an out Atheist for me is to show others like myself that there's no reason to hide from the rest of the world but to embrace them with your knowledge of it. In hope's one day everyone can believe we should all be able to think freely for ourselves and the greater good of all human kind. Thanks for reading

I just listened to this episode yesterday. I need to take better note of when the live broadcasts happen so I can watch timely. I just can't get over the story of North Carolina wanting to declare a state religion. That it sends an exclusionary message to people of other faiths and nonbelievers (who incidentally also pay taxes to hear that their world view matters less) just makes my blood boil. NC is turning into one of those states (well, like mine (AZ)) that only makes the news with something bad. In the southwest we have people in the upper ranks of state politics who are young earth creationists and it wasn't that long ago relatively speaking that a friend of mine was posting on her timeline to the effect of, "I live in NC where I can marry my opposite sex cousin but not another woman". Anyway, marriage equality wasn't the point this time and I'm listening for any follow-up of the state religion issue (for closure hopefully) on "AN" and Freethought Radio.

DUSTIN YOU MAD GENIUS

Pulse was the problem. I exited out of GNOME and into Window Maker, loaded the hangout, and instead of Pulse audio devices, I got ALSA ones. That was enough to use the alsa backend to get it into JACK audio.

I'd be happy to give you guys a tour of it one of these days. It's a lot easier to use than it looks.

Still grooving on the episode, btw. I want dinosaurs with feathers.

Just want to defend Iceland a bit. Iceland is an incredibly feminist, forward thinking country so not surprised they are concerned about pornography's exploitation of women. But they are also a European country, so much of their porn features poorer women who are sex slaves from Eastern European countries. Iceland is an incredibly feminist, forward thinking country so not surprised they are concerned about pornography’s exploitation of women. But they are also a European country, so much of their porn features poorer women who are sex slaves from Eastern European countries. So when it comes to porn, look for the “Made in the USA” label!

This one ties in nicely with the work Mikey Weinstein is doing over at the MRFF. I was fortunate in that my time iin the Coast Guard was spent on Cutters with moderate believers and we were never forced into anything other than "securing games of chance" on Sundays while services were being held for the five guys out of a hundred and eighty that actually went. It's funny how the members of our Armed Forces are taught to never back down from a fight UNLESS that fight contradicts the Christianity du jour.

Jerry is a blessing for our side. Seriously. So affable and charismatic (in a good way)... He knows the pain of reason and logic as he reconciled an existence that does not have a god... His helping the Recovering From Religion foundation is the perfect fit in the community.

I only meet him in person for a couple minutes, but I feel he really wears his heart on his sleeve. That comes through when he speaks. Love the guy. If I ever meet him again, he's getting a big hug

I really enjoyed your interview with Jerry DeWitt. He was able to put some things into perspective for me that I didn't realize I was having trouble with. Thanks for having him on the show!

I'm really enjoying the format of your show. It would be too easy (and redundant, for that matter) to talk only about atheism and debunking theism. There's a limit to what one can talk about in regards to that, and you guys don't get stuck there. Instead, you are right up there with a well-conceived cable news show, as you look at history, science, and politics/religion/culture - but through a pro-reason and logic lens. Kudos! You make your podcast a cut above many of your fellow atheist competitors. I will be listening regularly.
